What is a Mummy MOT?

A Mummy MOT is a specialist postnatal examination for women following both vaginal and caesarean deliveries. It assesses how your posture, pelvic floor muscles and stomach muscles are recovering after birth. And if they’re not, our specialist physiotherapist can provide you with exercises and treatment to help in your recovery and get you back to being able to exercise safely.

After pregnancy, up to half of all women experience weakness in both the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles and up to a third still have a tummy gap at eight weeks post-birth. This can cause instability or poor core strength leading to women developing pelvic or back pain or bladder, bowel and sexual dysfunction. These conditions should not be something you just put up with as a result of having a baby and a Mummy MOT will allow you to recover and help prevent this from being pushed to one side and considered as your new 'normal'.

How far post-partum do I need to be?

It’s recommended that women have an initial assessment after their 6-8 week GP check. However, we also treat women who gave birth years ago that may still have a tummy gap or related pelvic floor issues.

What is included in a Mummy MOT?

An Initial Appointment (1hr - £75) includes:

  • A screening questionnaire

  • Posture check

  • Tummy gap check

  • Pelvic floor examination (including screens for prolapse, incontinence, and pain during sexual intercourse)

  • Functional movement check (we know that a lot of lifting, bending and squatting is involved in being a mum!)

  • Treatment (may include eduction and advice on safe activities and returning to sport and normal living, bespoke rehabilitation programes and soft tissue release)

Depending on your physiotherapists findings it may be suggested you attend a follow up appointment (30 mins - £33) to continue and progress with your treatment.
